A bedside surface only needs to support the nighttime routine. In a narrow room, reducing its depth can protect circulation without giving up a lamp, water, or a place for a book.
Mount a shallow shelf
A wall shelf around the height of the mattress creates a clean landing place and leaves the floor open. Round exposed corners where possible and use fixings suitable for the wall and expected load.
Use a slim picture ledge
A deep picture ledge can hold a phone, glasses, and a small book while projecting only a few inches. Pair it with a wall light so a lamp does not consume the entire surface.
Choose a small stool with a second job
A stable stool works beside the bed and can move to the living area as an extra seat or plant stand. Avoid woven or uneven tops if you regularly place a glass of water there.
Build storage into the headboard
A headboard ledge or side cubby keeps the bed zone visually unified. Check that shelves do not project near your head and that charging cables can route without pinching.
Limit the surface to the objects used after lights out or immediately after waking. Everything else belongs in a drawer, wardrobe, or morning landing zone.
