Curtains occupy a surprising amount of visual space. In a compact bedroom, their height and fullness can either stretch the room or make the window look undersized.
Start close to the ceiling
Mount the track or rod several inches above the frame, or at the ceiling when the architecture allows. The longer vertical line makes the wall read taller and gives even an ordinary window more presence.
Extend beyond the glass
Allow the panels to stack mostly beside the window when open. More exposed glass means more daylight, and the wider composition makes the opening look larger.
Choose fabric with quiet movement
Washed linen, linen-look blends, and soft cotton create depth without the stiffness of heavy formal drapery. A warm oatmeal, chalk, or pale stone usually blends with the wall while still adding texture.
Control the hem
Panels that just meet the floor look crisp and are easy to keep clean. A small break can feel relaxed, but a large puddle takes up visual and physical space that a small room rarely has to spare.
Blackout does not have to mean bulky. Use a separate lining or a slim roller shade behind a softer decorative panel, then keep the hardware and headings simple.
